如何应对名校教授一对一小灶辅导

At some point in your university life – and especially if you’re going somewhere like Oxford or Cambridge – you’ll have to deal with the terrifying prospect of a one-on-one tutorial. Imagine the scene: a room empty but for the opposing intellects of you and your tutor. Only one of you will survive this academic Hunger Games; the other will be tossed aside to wallow in self-pity and rewrite their essay in a pool of tea and tears (that’s you). Here’s some tips to help you come out (relatively) unscathed.

在某个遭命运作弄的时点，特别是如果身处牛津剑桥这样众神云集的所在，那么恭喜你，你将有幸享受到学而思级别的一对一辅导。试想一下：空荡荡的教室里，只有你，和那个动动小脑即可轻松碾压你的导师。在这场以教室为阵地的饥饿游戏中，只有一个人能够笑到最后；而另一个，会被杀得片甲不留，推下竞技场，然后就着浓茶和涕泪重写一篇又一篇的essay（躺枪）。为了贯彻普度众生的宏旨，我们在此特别献上（聊胜于无的）护体神计几则，以助大家全身而入、也（尽量）全身而出。

不打无准备之仗

Be prepared

This pretty much goes without saying, but we’ll say it anyway. Fool yourself into thinking the tutorial is a day before it actually is, then make sure you’re ready even a day before that. It took a tutor less than eighteen seconds to realise that I hadn’t done the weekly reading once, but it took me eighteen hours to mentally recover from the experience – learn from my mistakes, and make sure you go into the tutorial ready for anything!

好吧这是一句废话，但还是得啰嗦一遍。迈进辅导室的前一天，就请展开想象的翅膀。当然，还是在大前天就做足准备比较好。我的导师只要18秒，就能看出来我是不是完成了每周的阅读任务，但我却需要18个小时来平复这18秒的速度与激情带给我的心理创伤。请一定从我的错误中吸取教训，不打无准备之仗啊！

必要时左右逢源

Be flexible

Unfortunately, being prepared isn’t enough for a one-on-one tutorial. Most of the time you’ll talk about what you thought you were going to talk about for five minutes, and then the tutor will decide to talk about something even more difficult and obscure. They don’t do this to catch you out or purposefully make you anxious (well, some of them might), but to instigate some interesting discussion. They probably just want you to have a stab at whatever they’re asking.

悲催的是，顺利挺过一对一辅导，做好应战准备还并不够。大多情况下，你说说自己最初的想法，大概五分钟，然后导师便开始下一轮轰炸，开启一些更为高深艰涩的对话。其实导师这样，并不是想看你洋相百出，也不是故意让你抓狂（呵呵，不排除有些导师是），而只是想引领你追求更高远的学术境界，试着思考导师问的问题。

Have a stab at whatever they ask you

Don’t be afraid to be wrong! Every great idea is built on a mass of crappy ideas, and your tutorial will be no different – and what’s more, your tutor knows it. In fact, if your tutor asks a seemingly random or unusually difficult question, they probably don’t know the answer themselves. In a situation like that, sometimes it pays to say whatever you’re thinking of.

别怕出错！每个一流的想法都建立在无数八流的闪念之上，一对一辅导当然也不例外，而且导师自己也心知肚明。其实，当导师问了一些看似不经意的、或是无比神异的问题时，很可能导师自己也不知道答案。这时，只要把你能想到的都说出来，就会有收获啦！

Don’t say whatever you’re thinking of

Then again, you don’t want to babble, and that can be a problem for people uncomfortable with long silences. One-on-one tutorials are where long silences go to learn how to be good at being long silences. Luckily you can turn this to your advantage by using this time to collect your thoughts, so that you can present a clear point to your tutor. They won’t mind if that means you’re quiet for a while – in fact, they’ll probably prefer it to your mindless ranting.

再次强调，嘴别刨，受不了长时间尴尬冷场的小伙伴注意了。一对一辅导呢，能够教会你如何在长时间的死寂中学会优雅地面对长时间的死寂。不过你也可以充分利用起这些垃圾时间，整理整理思路，然后把你的想法清晰地呈报你的导师。他们不会介意你的间歇性失语症。事实上，比起滔滔不绝的碎碎念来，他们或许更愿意“此处无声胜有声”。

别走心

Forget about it

At the end of the day, it’s only a tutorial. Don’t get worked up about it. In fact, you’ll probably perform better if you remain calm and collected; approach it as an opportunity for some productive discussion with someone that knows their stuff, not a chance for your tutor to academically annihilate you. They could probably do that if they wanted, but it wouldn’t be particularly useful for anyone involved.

说破天了，这只是一次一对一辅导，没啥大不了，千万不必为此动了肝气——就当成是能够和一位难得肚子里有墨水的人进行一次干货不少的学术讨论的机会好了。你的导师绝没有借此羞辱你的不良动机（当然他们要是想的话随时都可以，只不过这样完全无法促进社会和谐与科学进步）。所以如果你能始终保持心态平和、镇定自若，就一定会表现得更好。
